Nonprofit Board Members are responsible for the assets of the organization and provide insight, oversight and foresight. They are often compared to crows perched on the crows nest, watching for storm clouds and rainbows. While they’re not in charge of the daily activities, they need to be aware of the bigger picture and understand what is required to get things done.
No matter if your non-profit is a seasoned or new start-up there are a variety of resources to help identify the best board members. One of the best options is to connect with your existing volunteer base. Check out your current committees and events. Also look for people who are likely to be great leaders. You can also leverage your newsletters and social media to promote your board positions to your neighborhood.
Search job boards such as Impact Opportunity or Idealist for nonprofits and mission-driven organisations. Additionally, look within your professional field to find people who might be involved with nonprofits through their industries associations or through corporations that donate to them as part of their charitable giving. If you discover several people who appear to be suitable candidates get in touch with them and ask if they are interested in serving on your board.
Remember that new board members as with any other staff member, must receive a thorough orientation to ensure they are aware of their duties. This includes a set of clearly defined expectations regarding meeting attendance and agendas, fundraising, the responsibilities for which members are recruited (e.g. budget management), as well as other governance guidelines.
